Yesterday I had one of my worst driving experience ever; today one of the best

Sometimes my potato camera impresses me!

It’s funny how weather can turn a simple drive into an adventure, sometimes. Yesterday I drove a 100 miles from my in laws to some friends’ house for an end of year party. That involved driving on mostly abandoned forest roads, deep in French countryside. Now, that would have been absolutely awesome on most days, but yesterday the weather suddenly turned very cold (about -5°C, 25°F), and the heaviest fog I’d ever witnessed arose, deep within the forest. And when I say deep, I mean I couldn’t see anything from about one car length in front of me.

Add to that a deep night, freezing temperatures and unmarked, twisty and unknown-to-me roads, and you can see how terrifying that was. I spent two long hours driving at about 30mph when I could see the best, and longing for the reassuring presence of other cars’ light beams close to me when the fog was at its worst.

But thankfully I made it to the party without much actual problems, except the fear of course. And that meant that today, I had to drive back to my in laws.

But it was mid day, and the fog had about halved. Everything had frozen over; the forest, from a terrifying hole I though I’d never escape, turned into a beautifully colored haze, the red of the remaining leaves made almost pink by the ice covering them.

Agnes Obel was playing on the radio, the roads were empty, the Oppo Clio was perfect. I loved every moment of it.

So scary in the fog, but it really is a lovely winter wonderland.

Yeah! It was so beautiful today though, I was almost thankful for the freezing fog of yesterday night!

We are experiencing similar conditions up here in the UK, luckily I don’t need to drive out in the countryside at the moment.

Cool story, minus the fear! Funny how slightly different weather can so much influence the character of a road or area....I’m used to driving in a lot of whiteout snowstorms here, scary stuff, but the sunny day after when everything us glistening in the sun is gorgeous! :)

I can believe that! We haven’t had snow in a couple of years here, I miss it!
